In preparation for Avengers: Infinity War, I’m watching all the Marvel Studios movies leading up to it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

Man, it’s kind of hard to believe I’m close to being done. As I said in my  re-watch review of the first Guardians movie, the first volume is one of my favorite (if not my absolute favorite) Marvel movie. So the sequel had a lot to live up to. In the end, I really did love the movie still. It was hilarious at times, and really amped up the emotional content. I think Ego is a great villain. Kurt Russell gets to display some of his trademark charm, and his relationship with Peter makes for an interesting villain/hero dynamic.

I love, love, love the Gamora/Nebula stuff. And Yondu/Peter…. ugh. Someone’s cutting onions. Mantis is an amazing addition. As a fan of the Abnett/Lanning run it was cool to see another member from the comics join the group. Now I’d just love to see Moondragon and Phylla Vell in Guardians 3. 🙂

That being said, it doesn’t quite work as perfectly as Vol. 1 for me. I think, personally, it veers a little too much into slapstick for my tastes at times. A little goes a long way. The humor seems a little more on the nose this time, maybe, too? Maybe it was the slapstick bit, but it just seems a little less natural than the first movie. But these are VERY minor complaints. The movie just fills me with so much joy by the end. As a bonus, the song and video for “Guardians Inferno” (featuring Xardu Hasselfrau himself!) is so great. The promise of finally getting Adam Warlock (though not in time for Infinity War… grrrr) is also exciting.
