In preparation for Avengers: Infinity War, I’m watching all the Marvel Studios movies leading up to it.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
I was really excited to watch this one. I’m happy to say it still holds up as one of the best Marvel movies. It’s a great evolution of Cap as a character, and Robert Redford is superb in his role. I love the way it plays with some pretty important questions about what price a nation is willing to pay in the name of freedom. Like Iron Man 3, it also shows that Marvel is willing to give their superhero films a unique bent so that they don’t all feel the same. In this case, it’s basically a spy thriller.
Some quick notes:
• Still amazed with the Hayley Atwell as a much older Agent Carter
• Anthony Mackie is freaking great as Falcon/Sam here. I feel like he never has gotten QUITE as good a spotlight since.
• The elevator scene is still thrilling and fantastic.
• Still can’t believe we got so lucky to have Chris Evans as Captain America. He’s just the right mix of hunkiness, forthrightness, confidence, and humor. He embodies a hero you can totally believe in, and kind of cuts through the BS. At the same time, he’s not infallible.
