In preparation for Avengers: Infinity War, I’m watching all the Marvel Studios movies leading up to it.

Thor (2011)

I remember when Thor came out, I was so excited and amazed that they were opening up the Marvel Universe to the realms of magic and cosmic happenings. A lot of the fun of that has worn off considering the cool things that have come later. Asgard, for instance, feels awfully empty compared to the bustling fullness of the world building of Wakanda. But there’s still al lot to like. Even with Chris Hemsworth’s dyed eyebrows (glad they gave up on that) Hemsworth is incredibly charming. I miss seeing more of the Warriors Three and especially Sif. Loki starts his reign as the best Marvel villain for a very long time, and the Destroyer is impressively realized.

There’s still that feeling that A) the budgets aren’t huge yet and B) Marvel is trying hard to ease people slowly into the crazier aspects of Thor. I was surprised by how murky and dark the movie feels at times. I miss the crispness of the cinematography of Iron Man. The result is a fun movie that I still enjoy, but that would fall near the bottom of my list of favorite Marvel Studios movies.
